As a part of UKS’ 100th anniversary program 100 YEARS OF CONVIVIALITY, UKS has been hosting seminars that discuss the political dimensions of how to live and work together as artists. On 18 November the series will conclude at Akademirommet, around the back of Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo, with How Do We Carry On?, a seminar on keeping up our energy, spirits, and visions for the future, in spite of adversity. The seminar is divided into a daytime session and evening session—the latter including a film screening followed by a Q&A in Kunstnernes Hus’ cinema.

HOW DO WE CARRY ON?

—> LETTER FROM LISA BARAITSER

How are political aims and struggles carried on from one generation to the next? Every political and social movement has had strides of progress met with waves of setbacks. This ebb and flow of social change far exceeds the intimate timeframes of our lives. How do we transgress our individual struggles when faced with such breathtaking challenges as the violence of racism, transphobia, homophobia and biphobia, classism, ableism, and ageism, or such abstract, unthinkable threats as the climate emergency? And how do we adjust the course laid out for us, if we realize that things are not working out?

This seminar brings together practitioners who have found artistic means of addressing how to carry on. We will be thinking about collective mourning, climate grief, intergenerational knowledge, and youth perspectives—as well as how these processes create new communities.

The aim is to reflect on methods and metaphors that are informed by co-learning, collective reflection, and restitution, and broader community building. All of these are necessary to keep striving for an inclusive and mutually supportive society, beyond the scope of the human.

Daytime
The daytime program runs from 10am–4.30pm and includes breakfast, coffee, and lunch. The full program will be published here shortly.

Evening
In the evening all seminar guests and new guests are welcome back at 7pm for the screening of Rory Pilgrim’s film The Undercurrent (2019), followed by a Q&A with Pilgrim and collaborator Liam Neupert.
