SEMINAR

A key question for UKS throughout its history has been, and remains, how artists can become agents and advocates for political change. Art as a call to action, or as an expression of solidarity, has featured prominently in the exhibition history of UKS. The organization itself has had a great impact on the cultural and political landscape in Norway by offering artists a structure for organizing and collectively negotiating terms of work. One consequence of the global pandemic is that artists are once again organizing to work collectively for their interests.

This seminar, Artists Organizing Artists, brings together artists and organizers from Norway, Denmark, Italy, and the UK to discuss how and why artists organize, and what to organize around. There will be conversations, presentations, a workshop, and a letter. The full program will be published here shortly.

The seminar is kindly supported by Nordic Culture Fund and Fritt Ord, and presented in collaboration with Deichman Bjørvika.

BOOK LAUNCH & BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

100 years ago, The Young Artists’ Society (UKS) was founded by artists for artists. Since the beginning in 1921, UKS has served a triple function: an artist union, exhibition space, and a social forum for artists. The history of UKS is diverse and ungovernable. It is the artists’ history.

The book Kvisten på grenen, grenen på treet: Unge Kunstneres Samfund 1921 – 2021 contains texts by Øystein Sjåstad, Frode Sandvik, Victoria Durnak, Marit Paasche, Sara R. Yazdani, Ana Maria Bresciani, Rhea Dall, Maria Horvei, Steffen Håndlykken, and Jan Verwoert, and is richly illustrated with material from UKS’ archive. Artistic contributions are by Wendimagegn Belete, Siri Hjort & Sebastian Kjølaas, and Geir Tore Holm & Søssa Jørgensen. Editors are Halvor Haugen and Nina Schjønsby. Design by Ian Brown, published by Press.

At Kunsthall Oslo the book will be launched and celebrated with speeches, drinks, and of course, CAKE! The event is free and open to all.

The event is made in collaboration with Kunsthall Oslo.
