It is night. The yellow light from the streetlamps absorbs the colors of the streets, the trees, the metal fence leading to the construction site. It is quiet, only some sand crunching under your shoes from the wooden boards placed in layers, consecutively, like bridges. You have walked this path before, many times, without stopping because a construction site is not a real place – it is something that no longer exists and does not exist yet – a transformation process in machines of iron, cables, stone, asphalt, in motion towards becoming something else. Something other, or an otherness, that gradually appears to be as unresolved as the limits you have learned are set by the outer layer of your skin.

Among Spirits of Mineral Pitch and Other Public Apparitions is Damla Kilickiran’s study of the potential of selected infrastructural objects as spaces, spirits, and transformative forces in relation to a body for which they were not created. Kilickiran’s first institutional solo exhibition has grown from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The artist roamed the streets a locked-down Oslo in an attempt to establish a panpsychic connection with the city’s infrastructural objects and materials.
