PRESS RELEASE
MEET THE NEW UKS DIRECTOR, MIRIAM WISTREICH!

UKS is happy to announce that Miriam Wistreich is our new director. Wistreich will take up her new position on February 15, 2021.

Wistreich (b. 1985) comes from a position as Creative Director at Hotel Maria Kapel in Hoorn, the Netherlands, a residency and exhibition space that she helped reform into an institution that supports young artistic practice. Her program Slow Burn, conceived in collaboration with artists Maja Bekan and Griet Menschaert, employed an experimental method of institutional practice that put care in the center of operations.

Miriam Wistreich comments:

The question of building sustainable art worlds and artistic practices has been on my mind and in my work for several years. I am thrilled to take on the directorship of UKS, an institution that leads the conversation on the fundamental issues of how we live and work as creative practitioners. UKS is really in the business of pushing for ideal institutions. I find this utopian task truly inspiring and I look forward to collaborating with the artists, team and board of UKS as we work through the pertinent questions of access and equality in today’s art world.”

Wistreich has previously worked with various institutions, including If I Can’t Dance I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and ARKEN Museum of Modern Art. She is an alumna of the De Appel Curatorial program and a member of the curatorial platform the Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology, with whom she curated the 2020 edition of the artist-run biennial Alt_Cph under the title Patterns in Resistance. She has curated exhibitions with artists and thinkers such as Isabelle Andriessen, Marie Kølbæk Iversen, Jakob Kirkegaard, Sands Murray-Wassink, Astrida Neimanis, Lisa Baraitser, and Mehraneh Atashi.

Aside from art, she enjoys cooking, knitting, puppies, and middlebrow cinema.

UKS welcomes the new director and looks forward to her arrival. UKS chairman Steffen Håndlykken comments:

In Miriam Wistreich UKS has found a director who shares our commitment to the betterment of artists’ working conditions, both within the institution and on a political level. She brings to UKS broad experience from curating, managing, and writing in international contexts, but the board were equally taken by the presence and warmth she brought to our meetings. We look forward with much anticipation to have Miriam as host and steward of the UKS program

UKS’ production manager Roderick Hietbrink, who served as Acting Director during Rhea Dall’s leave of absence in 2019, will be  interim director until February 15.
