TO ASSIST OR TO BE ASSISTED? A (TRANSLATED) HANDBOOK FOR THE ARTIST ASSISTANT SCHEME
As this year’s application deadline, 3 December, draws near, UKS is giving you an early Christmas present: our handbook for the artist assistant scheme, in English translation. Please join us for the launch on 4 November, where we will also offer expert advice for prospective assistants and assisted artists.
The handbook was published in Norwegian in 2023 and we are very happy to launch it in English with synthesised and collected information on employment rights, salary, how to manage expectations, and more. The handbook provides information to anyone applying, and to artists who have been, or are themselves, assistants as well as have an assistant.
ABOUT THE ARTIST ASSISTANT SCHEME
The artist assistant scheme, launched in 2017, provides ‘newly established artists with the opportunity to work as an assistant to a more established colleague in a part-time position for one or two years’. The scheme is managed by the Arts Council Norway.
Deputy Chair of UKS, Johanne Laache, will introduce the handbook, while Arts Council Norway’s contact person for Kunstnerassistentordningen, Mette Karlsvik, will share her experience of the assistant scheme in conversation with Chair of UKS, Ragnhild Aamås. There will of course be an opportunity to ask questions.
Feel free to hang around after the event to mingle and connect with potential co-applicants, and welcome to UKS!
ACCESS INFORMATION
This talk is spoken in Norwegian or English, depending on the audience’s wishes. The event is wheelchair accessible.
The event will be streamed via a link that will be provided soon.
UKS has received funding for the translated 9 to 5: A Handbook for the Artist Assistant Scheme from Arts Council Norway.
