The presentation UKS Kunstnerbolig is a draft concept for artists’ housing to be integrated into Oslo’s development planning.

Throughout 2018, proposing and securing various models for artists’ housing to be implemented during Oslo’s rapid urban development has been a primary focus of UKS as a political organization, working towards better conditions for young artists in Norway. This action and advocacy has been spearheaded by UKS’ board. UKS has led the project development and feasibility study with Fragment architecture. The resulting concept is proposed for the Oslo suburb, Hovinbyen.

Securing better living and working spaces for artists has been on UKS’ agenda since its foundation, almost 100 years ago. A historical example—the 1959 compound of artists’ housing in Trolltun, Bøler—was a UKS initiative. UKS Kunstnerbolig continues this tradition—strengthening the cultural infrastructure of the city. The project seeks to create a knowledge base of new ideas for artists’ housing and to this end a reference group—comprising artists, the UKS Chair and Deputy Chair, and the Fragment team—was formed to develop a contemporary housing concept. Intended to serve the needs of today’s artists, the project is also a proposition that could be scaled and implemented throughout Norway.

The project is supported by the Agency for Planning and Building and the Agency for Cultural Affairs, City of Oslo.
