In November 2023, UKS launched the new event series COMMUNE, its name and logo borrowed from a contribution by British artist Tai Shani for UKS’ 100th-anniversary exhibition, which circled around conviviality and struggle, disagreement and discourse. COMMUNE invites local and international agents from the arts and cultural spheres to set UKS’ spaces in motion – both artistically and socially – as a flexible format that can span performances or one-night-only exhibitions, archival presentations and conversations or, as is the case for this third iteration, intimate reading groups.

On Thursday 25 January, participants are invited into UKS’ newly refurbished kitchen to engage in a reading group led by Oslo-based visual artist Nikhil Vettukattil, on a text by artist and researcher Ruth Catlow from the 2022 anthology Radical Friends: Decentralised Autonomous Organisations edited by Ruth Catlow and Penny Rafferty.

The essay, titled ‘Translocal Belonging and Cultural Cooperation after the Blockchain – A Citizen Sci-fi’, poses questions around belonging and community in translocal network cultures, radical imagination and processes of worlding. We will read and discuss the text and its ideas, led by Vettukattil. The event is free and open to all who register to participate (through emailing info@uks.no). A pdf copy of the text will be shared in advance.
