UKS is proud to launch Bande à part –On Independent Art Institutions! For the launch of the book, UKS convenes a panel consisting of Rhea Dall, co-editor and initiator of Bande à part and former director of UKS; Saman Kamyab, artist and founder of Caravan; and Hedda Grevle Ottesen, artist and part of the team behind K4 and recently also Podium. The panel is moderated by Steffen Håndlykken, chair of UKS and co-founder of 1857.

This book builds on the Bande à part conference on independent art institutions held by UKS in Oslo in 2019. Bande à part – On Independent Art Institutions discusses the reasons, means, and rationales of a range of recent independent institutions that run on small economies yet have considerable impact within their respective art scenes. The book is also a snapshot in time: while some of the 15 self-organized art institutions operating in 2019 are still going strong, others have transformed completely or even ceased to exist. The launch celebrates the spirit of self-organization and asks how it manifests in young artist-run spaces in Oslo today.

Bande à part – On Independent Art Institutions was published in 2021. It is co-published by UKS (Oslo), Lulu (Mexico City), and Mousse Publishing (Milan), and designed by Wkshps (Prem Krishnamurthy & Judith Gärtner). Read more about the book and purchase it here.

The panel is spoken in English. Festive drinks will be available following the discussion and the book will be available at a reduced price at the launch.

The launch of Bande à part is hosted by Kunsthall Oslo in the luxurious surroundings of their current exhibition Rammellzee: Ransom Notes. Stream the event via YouTube here.
