#9 HOW TO PRACTICE?
ELINE MUGAAS

Considering collegial exchange, informal peer-to-peer/practice-to-practice learning, and attempts at friendship as a fundamental part of our remit, UKS presents the weekly walk-in-workshop: HOW TO PRACTICE?

Starting off the workweek every Monday morning at 10am, rotating local and international artists teach their conspicuous version of this essential question—HOW TO PRACTICE?—serving up their tricks and toolboxes, angry birds, excel, or yoga as UKS serves free coffee.

For the ninth walk-in-workshop, on Monday, 25 March at 10am Oslo-based artist ELINE MUGAAS (b. 1969) will talk about her multiple work strategies spanning close photographic encounters, art historical dialogues, collaborative collage, co-publishing, and co-curating.

Since 2008, Mugaas has, together with artist Elise Storsveen, published the fanzine ALBUM. This is comprised of ubiquitous images culled from Scandinavian etiquette manuals, cookbooks, travel magazines, craft books, fashion magazines, and sex guides. The fanzine threads narratives of the human body, sexuality, and the social lives of images. In 2013/2014, ALBUM co-curated the exhibition Hold Stenhårdt fast på greia di—Art and Women’s Rights in Norway 1968–1989 (Kunsthall Oslo; Kunsthall Stavanger), an important instigation of the discussion around female artists’ inclusion in the Norwegian canon. In particular, Mugaas’ extensive research on Norwegian artist Siri Anker Aurdal (b. 1937), a UKS member and exhibitor, brought visibility to a body of work that had largely disappeared from art history. Recently Mugaas was nominated for the 2019 Lorck Schive Art Prize, and currently she is working on issue two of a series of five visual essays under the title Dyslexic Times.
