#15 HOW TO PRACTICE?
CHARLOTTE THIIS-EVENSEN

Considering collegial exchange, informal peer-to-peer/practice-to-practice learning, and attempts at friendship as a fundamental part of our remit, UKS presents the weekly walk-in-workshop: HOW TO PRACTICE?

Starting off the workweek every Monday morning at 10am, rotating local and international artists teach their conspicuous version of this essential question—HOW TO PRACTICE?—serving up their tricks and toolboxes, angry birds, excel, or yoga as UKS serves free coffee.

For UKS’ fourteenth walk-in-workshop on Monday, 3 June at 10am, Oslo-based artist, journalist, and director CHARLOTTE THIIS-EVENSEN (b. 1968) will talk about her practice through an interview conducted via (anonymized) audience questions.

UKS asked Charlotte how this will pan out—what can we expect from your HOW TO PRACTICE session?
– You’ll get a better insight into how I operate between art and journalism. I might uproot a few prejudices about working interdisciplinary—and you can expect humor!

You’re good at interviews, what’s your go-to question?
– The most important thing for me as an interviewer is to listen to what the interviewee is saying, and thus to put myself in the background. One question that always works doesn’t exist.

What three words would you use to define where your artistic practice is at right now?
– Middle. Of. Life.

Thiis-Evensen works with photography, film, sound, and installation. She holds a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo and has studied literature at the Univesity of Oslo. She is also a journalist and director at the Norwegian Broadcasting Coorporation (NRK), known for, amongst other TV series, Arkitektenes hjem. Thiis-Evensen has had solo exhibitions at Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo; Sørlandet Kunstmuseum, Kristiansand; Vigeland-museet, Oslo; and Lillehammer Kunstmuseum. Her work has also been shown in a series of group exhibition and film festivals in Norway and internationally.
